There are five main positions: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. Each has unique roles in offense, defense, and ball movement.
In professional leagues like the NBA, games have four quarters, each 12 minutes long. Time may vary in other leagues.
An offensive player can’t stay in the key (paint area) for more than three seconds while their team has the ball.
Traveling occurs when a player holding the ball moves their pivot foot without dribbling, or takes extra steps not allowed.
Depending on the league, a player is disqualified after reaching a certain number of personal fouls (e.g. 5 in many international/amateur games).
The shot clock is a timer that limits how long an offensive team has to attempt a field goal after gaining possession. If time expires without a shot, it’s a turnover.
